Palm and well: the water memory of the oasis

Before pumps, every family knew its well and its turn for water. The vocabulary of that system still shapes how the ksar speaks.

Ouargla sits above deep aquifers. For centuries its people dug wells by hand, some reaching water that rose under its own pressure.

Water was shared by time, measured and recorded, and disputes were settled by the assembly of the ksar.

Today the palm groves face new pressures. We spoke with farmers about what the old rules can still teach.

“The palm keeps its feet in water and its head in fire.”
