Theologian, legal theorist and traveller — the most famous name of Warjlan wrote books still taught today.

Born in the oasis and educated in Córdoba according to the biographers, Abu Ya‘qub returned home to teach and write.

His al-Dalil wa-l-Burhan argues for the use of reason in matters of faith; al-‘Adl wa-l-Insaf is a work of legal theory; his arrangement of the Musnad of al-Rabi‘ ibn Habib made a central hadith collection easier to study.

This essay follows his journeys and asks how an oasis on the edge of the Sahara produced a mind of such range.

“Knowledge is a journey, and the desert was never a wall to it.”
